HIDEOUT
Photography | Bosnian-Croatian border | 2023
In 2023, Lisa Kohl began a series of photographs entitled RUINS - a reflection on the architectures of „transition“ and the territories crossed on the border of Bosnia and Croatia. A geographical area marked by the presence of abandoned buildings that have been repurposed into refuges, shelters, and hideouts for individuals attempting to cross the border. HIDEOUT represents one such bunker from the Croat-Bosnian war (1992-1994), captured within a snowy landscape. A delicate balance between visibility and invisibility, presence and absence, place and „non-place,“ unfolds in this portrayal through an interplay of shadows and wandering. Throughout this series, fragments of landscapes and traces of a human presence are put in tension and connection. Issues surrounding territory and its wounds are explored within the contexts of migration and survival.
